Two of Derby’s regeneration success stories played host to the Design Conversations event held by URC Derby Cityscape on 23 September 2009.
The QUAD cinema provided the backdrop for the first half the day, while attention shifted to the impressive Roundhouse development at Pride Park for the afternoon session.
Providing an opportunity for regeneration professionals to gather and examine the value of good design in the urban environment, something central to Derby’s ongoing regeneration programme, the event was well attended by delegates from both the private and public sector.
Following an introduction from Derby Cityscape chief executive John Cadwallader, speakers at the QUAD included Kelvin Campbell, director at Urban Initiatives, Maggie Bolt, director of Public Art South West, and managing director of Space Syntax Tim Stonor, who discussed the relevance of behavioural patterns when designing public realm.
Ian Harris, director at Maber Architects, which was responsible for transforming derelict buildings alongside the city’s rail station into state-of-the-art learning spaces for Derby College, led a tour of the development in the afternoon and took questions on managing heritage-focused regeneration projects.
The event also included an opportunity for attendees to witness the impressive Cathedral Green development, which was singled out for praise by the Prime Minister earlier in the year when its bridge was short listed for the Better Public Building award.
