Derby on track

Plans have been submitted seeking to kick-start the regeneration of Derby’s railway station.

The first phase of the redevelopment will see the area in front of the Midland Road station redesigned to improve access and movement for buses and taxis.

If approved, the £2m proposals, drawn up by Derby Cityscape, Network Rail and East Midlands Trains, would create a 32-space taxi rank, more cycle parking and dedicated space for cars to drop off passengers .

Further development is planned in the future, including the refurbishment of a disused building next to the station into a large office development, a multi-storey car park, the redevelopment of the station building itself, and a commercial property development on the current car park sites.

Derby Cityscape chief executive John Cadwallader said: "The improvement of the railway station surroundings is an important element of the overall £2bn regeneration masterplan for Derby city centre.

"It is vital that, when visitors arrive at Derby Railway Station, they have a good first impression of the city and have easy access into the city centre. The transport interchange will make much easier for everyone using the station and will help traffic to flow more easily along this busy main route."
