Plans to develop the first new council houses for Derby in 30 years have been officially launched.

A total of £2.65m is to be invested in the development, comprising a mixture of around 13 houses and 12 flats. (Sourced from the BBC.)

The proposed housing development will be at the former Rolls-Royce factory site and the scheme is expected to be completed by Christmas 2010.

Alan Gill from Osmaston, who worked for the company for 44 years, dug the first piece of earth at the Elton Road site.

He said: "Everyone living here wants to see better housing, with gardens and spaces for children to play."

Cabinet member for housing and the environment Councillor Robert Troup added: "These will be the first council homes to be built in the Osmaston area for over 30 years."
