Derby’s £4.2 million swing bridge across the River Derwent from Cathedral Green has been nominated for the Prime Minister’s Better Public Building Award.
The bridge, designed by Ramboll, is the jewel in the Cathedral Quarter regeneration programme's crown. It made the shortlist of 24 structures thanks to its elegant form and a design inspired by Derby’s textile industry heritage.
Prime Minister Gordon Brown said: "I would like to congratulate all the projects short-listed.
"We are absolutely committed to good quality, sustainable public buildings and infrastructure, as we believe that buildings that work efficiently and effectively improve the lives of those working in and around them and mean better public services. These projects show how creative design can make a real difference."
The winner of the award, which went to the Royal Alexandra Children’s Hospital in Brighton last year, will be announced on 14 October 2009. For more information visit: www.betterpublicbuilding.org.uk
