Architecture students from the University of Derby have been playing a major role in the regeneration of the city’s North Riverside site.

Urban regeneration company Derby Cityscape was looking for ideas for the 17-acre brownfield site. It decided to consult the people likely to shape Derby’s evolution in the future - its students.

Part-time student Ian Curran, who works for Derby architect Maber Associates, scooped first prize. His proposal saw Exeter House transformed into affordable flats and offices and the installation of hydroelectric power generation from the River Derwent.

Derby Cityscape chief executive John Cadwallader said: "The innovative concepts and proposed uses for the North Riverside site are testament to the quality of the students on these courses.

"The ideas are going to be considered in discussions about the future development of the site."
