Roundhouse handover

The redevelopment of one of the city’s most significant historic buildings made meaningful progress this month, as the grade II-listed Roundhouse, once part of Derby Loco Works, was officially handed over to Derby College.

Set to open in September, the building, which dates from 1839, is set to take centre stage at the college’s Pride Park campus. It will become a new social space with dining facilities and visitor information.

The Roundhouse is one of few surviving buildings in the world that were designed specifically to enable the rotation of large engines brought in for maintenance work. Its revival as a college building is a fitting tribute to the role it once played in making Derby the centre of the country’s rail industry - a status that Derby maintains.

Adjacent buildings, including the former carriage shop, have been turned into a new library and the former engine shed is to house the college's engineering department. that part of the project is to be completed by the end of June.
