The college has appointed Derby regeneration company Cedar House Investments to take the project forward and says it intends to submit an outline planning application for a mid-size supermarket with up to 250 car parking spaces by the end of May.
The news comes as Melton Council's development committee prepares to consider an application from Sainsbury's for a store in Nottingham Road just a few hundred metres away.
The college's strategy received criticism from a leading Melton independent trader, but principal Chris Ball insists the plans will create a brighter future for the college and help regenerate the town.
He said: "Fifteen months ago we submitted a £40 million bid for public funding including a proposal to move our Melton operation to Burton Road alongside the post-16 centre which is being built."
