City’s park life boost

Derby residents were celebrating earlier this month when their parks received £142,500 from a £1 million grant by The Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) and the Big Lottery Fund (BIG).

The fund is dedicated to develop 11 parks across the UK, with Derby's share earmarked for Markeaton Park.

Councillor Alan Grimadell, cabinet member for leisure and culture, said: "This is good news for Derby residents and their favourite and much loved park."

This first-round of funding will enable detailed planning of changes to the park. A Stage Two application will then be lodged, seeking up to £2.4 million towards the £3 million the council intends to invest in implementing the designs.

"The funding we have been granted is the first step to developing plans that will restore Markeaton Park and ensure that it remains a family-friendly place for years to come," said Cllr Grimadell.

The Stage One proposal was put together after extensive consultation across the city back in 2009.

The next submission is likely to be presented to the HLF and BIG in September 2011.
